CCTV System

CCTV Surveillance Cameras are fast becoming common place as advances in its technology has made it much more affordable. CCTV cameras are now installed in homes, shops, businesses and office, acting as a deterrent to crimes as well as helping home and business owners keep an eye on what is happening in their absence.

The use of CCTV Cameras in the home has extended beyond mere protection, to include remote supervision and monitoring of domestic helpers, young children as well as elderly relatives. CCTV Cameras installed in the shops, while serves as a good deterrent to shoplifting, has been used to help management supervise and manage customer service standards.

CCTV DVR

Digital Video Recorders (DVR) record video images captured by cameras and stored them digitally on hard disks. Compared to the old medium of video cassette tapes, hard disks are far more superior in the ease of storage, backup and retrieval. And unlike tapes that can go moldy over time, affecting picture quality, hard disk does not have these limitation.  It is hence little wonder that the Digital Video Recorders are fast replacing the older Time Lapsed Video Recorders.

There are three types of Digital Video Recorders:

  • Embedded DVR
  • PC Based DVR
  • Network Video Recorder (NVR)

Embedded DVR comes complete with its own proprietary operating systems, Graphical User Interface and display capability and may include interface for mouse, panel and remote controller.  It is typically equipped with at least one USB port for backup to thumb drives or other portable external hard disks.

PC-Based DVR are really personal computer installed with system specific video captured cards.  The Video Capture Card may support 4 or 8 cameras, and will take up 1 PC Slot.  A dedicated DVR software is installed, running on Windows or Linux platform.

Network Video Recorder (NVR) are computers set up as network servers, linked to a group of network (IP) cameras for recording and monitoring of the digital images captured and transmitted by the IP Digital Cameras.

Embedded DVR

Embedded DVR comes equipped to support a fixed number of cameras and cannot be expanded.  A 4-Channel DVR by design can only support 4 cameras.  If more cameras are needed, you will have to change to a 8-channel DVR or a 16-channel DVR.

All our DVRs support concurrent live view, real-time playback and real-time recording.   They utilise H.264 compression techniques, smooth viewing over the internet and 3G network, and can be viewed using Windows and Apple computers and smart phones like IPhone, BlackBerry and Galaxy.

Hidden cameras, spy cameras or covert cameras - these terms are used interchangeably for cameras which are often disguised as other objects and are often invisible to the subject being monitored. Hidden cameras are fast becoming popular for household surveillance and can be built into common household objects such as motion detectors, smoke detectors, clocks and photo frame.

While it is ideal for catching the action, it does not deter crime and in some cases, may raise privacy issues. Hence it should be used only under special circumstances.

With as many as 256 preset position, you can switch it from one position to another - all within 2 seconds flat. And with some programming, you can set it on video watch tour, allowing it to automatically pan, tilt and zoom to your selected preset positions, making it a vital tool in surveillance.

CCTV Digital Cameras

A Digital or IP (Internet Protocol) cameras is a type of digital video camera which unlike analog CCTV Cameras, can send and receive data via a computer network and the internet.  Although most cameras that do this are webcams, the term "IP Camera" is usually applied only for surveillance.

IP or Digital camera presents a number of obvious advantages over analog cameras.  IP cameras have a higher resolution of at least 640 x 480 can can provide multi-megapixel resolution and HDTV image quality at 30 frames per second.  As they are linked over a Local Area Network (LAN), they can be moved anywhere on the network (including wireless network).

Some IP Cameras are equipped with built-in microphone and speaker, enabling two-way audio communication via a single network cable.  This enable users to communicate with what they are seeing e.g. a parent talking with the children remotely.

However IP Cameras are costlier than analog cameras.  They consume more bandwidth.   A typical IP Camera with a resolution of 640 x 480 at 10 frames per second in MJPEG mode requires about 3 MBit/s.  And they may be more prone to hacking.

When Should We Use IP Cameras?

Studies suggests that for systems with less than 16 camera, analog system is cheaper.  For system that require 16 - 32, they are equal.  Beyond 32, IP-based systems are more cost effective.

If your application require you to capture high resolution image for future detection and identification analysis such as monitoring of crowded train stations and road junctions, then an IP Camera with Megapixel capability would be the preferred solution.

How to Choose a CCTV System

Your selection of cameras and DVR largely depends on your application and budget.

If you are looking for a CCTV System for your home, most likely you will use dome cameras as they are smaller, less intrusive or threatening and esthetically designed, and can fit in easily in your living room, dining room or hall ways.  For your porch, walkways and back yard, you would normally use Infra Red Bullet Cameras as they are weatherproof and cost less than Box Cameras with its lenses and housing.

Most homes may need only 4 or at most 8 cameras, making the Embedded DVR the cost effective choice.  The Embedded DVR is also easy to use, has limited functions so there is no fear of messing it out, and sits in your living room like a DVD player.  It can be linked to your internet, allowing you to view the cameras over the internet on a computer or laptop, and over smart phones like IPhone or Samsung's Galaxy.  Most of these DVRs have Apps online which you can download to your hand phone.

If you are looking for a CCTV System for the office, the configuration would be quite similar to choosing for a home.  Depending on the size of the office, you may need up to 16 cameras.  Embedded DVR can handle up to 16 cameras.

If you are looking for a CCTV System for a retail shops, the only difference may be using adding a box camera with zoom in lens to watch the cashier counter.

If you are looking for a CCTV System for a plant or commercial building, depending on your requirement, you may use Speed Dome Cameras, Box Cameras for exterior perimeters, and PC-Based DVR as you may have more cameras, and need tighter surveillance and specialised functions.
