A Burglar’s Perspective
A burglar's greatest concern in robbing a house is getting in and out without being caught. Thus, understanding the burglar’s perspective and how they might go about choosing their target house can go a long way in crime prevention.
There are three main factors that may affect the burglars’ choice of target:
- Ease of access
- Lighting & Visibility
- Signs of other Deterrents

Making your home hard to access
Burglars usually travel light. Their success depends on their ability to move quickly and quietly. Burglars will carry with them equipment that is lightweight and essential for the job. Their equipment is meant to answer the basic needs of their 'job', as well as any complications which may occur. Do not provide burglars with additional equipment they could find useful for breaking in.
Hence do not leave ladders, shovels, axes around the yard that may be used by the burglar to get in. If you have garden furniture such as sunshades and stools, consider locking them or binding them to the ground.
|
Suitable plants such as thorny shrubs can be planted under a window, preventing burglars from entering. However be careful that an overuse of plants may block the vision to and from your ground floor, thus giving burglars a feeling of privacy and protection.
You can consider improving your physical security by installing gates and fences and selecting good locks and grills on windows and doors. |
Improving Lighting and Visibility
It is a well known fact that satisfactory lighting is a very valuable deterrent to crime. While almost any lighting might help reduce your risk of becoming a victim, lighting properly utilized can be an extremely effective deterrent to burglars and greatly help improve your security.
Consider installing outdoor lights especially near doorways and at the rear of your premises. Car porch and garages lights is also critical and may be activated by the penning of the front driveway gate or garage doors. Some of these lights may be left on permanently, or on a time and in some cases, you can use a motion sensor to activate the lights.
If you have a garden, ensure that trees and tall shrubs are trimmed and that your ground floor is not blocked by vegetation when looked upon from the sidewalks.

Signs of other Deterrents
CCTV Security Camera
CCTV Security Cameras installed at gates and perimeters are a good deterrent as burglars are not inclined to want to be recorded and have the video analyzed by the police.
Watch Dog
The role of a watchdog is not to attack or chase burglars away but to sound an alarm just like a burglar alarm system. However it would defeat the purpose if you dog barks at anything and everything. Hence it is important to train your dog to bark only when he spots those things that can potentially represent a threat to you or your property. The trick to train the dog is to go to him every time he barks. And depending on what he is barking at, to either praise or pat him or sharply tell him “no”. |
