Japanese Engineering: Hardware That Lasts
Aiphone is a Japanese company with decades of experience producing intercom systems. Their reputation rests on a simple proposition: hardware that is built well, designed carefully, and lasts a very long time. Aiphone systems installed in Singapore condominiums and homes in the early 2000s continue to operate today. The workmanship, component quality, and attention to detail behind the products reflects a Japanese manufacturing philosophy that prioritises longevity over aggressive feature expansion.
The honest picture today is one of a brand navigating a transition. Aiphone built their Singapore market position on wired intercom systems: the GT series for condominiums, the JO series for homes and offices: that were reliable but operated entirely on local proprietary networks with no cloud management and limited smartphone integration. That model is being challenged by IP-native brands like Akuvox whose cloud-first architecture addresses the operational and administration pain points that Aiphone's traditional systems have. Aiphone has been making progress: the IXG IP system, AiphoneCloud, and the IX|IXG unified platform launched in 2024 show genuine development effort. But in Singapore, where Securevision has seen the performance difference firsthand, Akuvox currently leads on platform maturity and response speed. For clients with existing Aiphone systems or a specific preference for Japanese hardware, Aiphone remains a solid choice. For new installations where cloud management and fast mobile app response are priorities, we will be transparent about the comparison.
Securevision Scope
Securevision installs and services Aiphone GT Series (condominiums), JO Series (landed homes and offices), and IXG Series (IP-based multi-tenant). We also service existing Aiphone installations: handset replacements, programming updates, system expansions, and fault diagnosis. For any Aiphone service request, note that programming changes require on-site access with the Aiphone support software and knowledge of the original system configuration.
Strengths, Limitations, and Where Aiphone Still Makes Sense
Aiphone's strengths are genuine: hardware quality and longevity that few competitors match. Understanding where those strengths apply, and where the platform has limitations, helps choose the right system for each project.
Hardware Quality: Built to Last 15+ Years
Aiphone door stations, indoor monitors, and guard stations are built to a standard that reflects decades of Japanese manufacturing refinement. The components are durable, the build quality is evident in the feel of the hardware, and the aesthetic finish: particularly on the door station range: is clean and professional. Securevision has serviced Aiphone GT systems in Singapore condominiums that have been running since the mid-2000s with minimal issues. The door stations in particular show very low failure rates over time.
For a condominium or property where the intercom system is expected to run for a decade or more without hardware replacement, this longevity has real economic value. A lower upfront cost system that requires hardware replacement in five or six years may end up costing more over the life of the building than a well-built Aiphone installation that runs reliably for fifteen.
GT Series: Proven Multi-Tenant Track Record in Singapore
Securevision has installed a significant number of Aiphone GT Series systems in Singapore condominiums. The GT Series is designed for multi-tenant buildings: up to 5,000 tenant stations, 480 entrance stations, and 96 guard stations. The system is stable, well-understood by engineers in Singapore, and has a long track record of reliable operation. For condominiums where the MCST has specified Aiphone or where continuity with an existing Aiphone installation is valued, the GT Series remains a supportable choice.
The GT Series has been progressively updated to add smartphone app capability via the GT-TLI-IP adaptor, and optional card reader modules can be added at entrance stations for card-based resident entry. The card reader integration is a physical add-on rather than a deeply integrated access control system: it works, but it operates separately from the intercom rather than as a unified platform.
JO Series: Reliable Residential Intercom
The Aiphone JO Series is a wired video intercom for landed homes and small offices: a door station outside, a master monitor inside, and smartphone app capability on Wi-Fi-enabled models (JO-1MDW). The system is simple, reliable, and has been a practical choice for Singapore landed homes for many years.
The honest note on app response: the JO Series app relays calls via the home's Wi-Fi network rather than a direct SIP connection. This introduces latency: the time between a visitor pressing the door station and the call arriving on the homeowner's phone is noticeably longer than on an Akuvox system. For residents who primarily answer on the indoor monitor (which responds instantly), this is not an issue. For residents who rely primarily on the smartphone app for remote door release, the delay is a practical consideration worth understanding before specifying.
IXG Series: Aiphone's IP Platform, Making Progress
Aiphone's IXG Series is their full IP residential intercom system: SIP and ONVIF compliant, with a cloud gateway adaptor (IXGW-TGW) for remote configuration and monitoring via AiphoneCloud. The unified IX|IXG Series launched in April 2024 merges commercial and residential IP into one platform. Active firmware updates through 2025 show ongoing development investment.
Securevision's honest assessment: IXG is a genuine step forward from the GT Series' traditional architecture, but it is newer in Singapore and our deployment experience is more limited than with GT. For clients specifically wanting Aiphone's IP platform for a new condominium installation, we would evaluate IXG on a project basis. For clients wanting the most mature, cloud-first IP intercom with the fastest mobile app response, Akuvox remains our primary recommendation: but we acknowledge Aiphone is narrowing the gap.
An Important Practical Note on GT Series Programming
The traditional Aiphone GT Series stores all programming locally: tenant directories, handset assignments, and system configuration all reside on the system controller, not on a cloud server. Making changes requires on-site access with an Aiphone-compatible laptop and the system's programming software.
This creates a specific practical challenge in Singapore condominiums: if a resident's indoor handset or monitor needs replacing, the replacement unit must be configured by someone with access to the original programming setup. A resident cannot simply purchase a compatible Aiphone handset and plug it in: it requires a programmer who knows the system and has the access credentials.
For condominiums where Securevision installed the original system, this is straightforward: we maintain the configuration records and can handle changes. For condominiums where the original installer is no longer available or the system was transferred without documentation, programming access becomes a complication. This is one reason cloud-managed systems like Akuvox SmartPlus represent a step forward for condominium administration: changes are made by the managing agent through a browser, without specialist hardware or site visits.
Aiphone Systems We Work With
These are the three Aiphone product lines Securevision installs and services in Singapore.
GT Series: Multi-Tenant
Aiphone's flagship condominium and multi-tenant intercom system. Up to 5,000 tenant stations per system. Entrance stations, indoor monitors, guard stations. Smartphone app via GT-TLI-IP adaptor add-on. Optional card reader module at entrance stations. Local programming: changes require on-site access.
JO Series: Residential
Wired video intercom for landed homes and small offices. Door station plus indoor master monitor. JO-1MDW model has Wi-Fi for smartphone app relay. Reliable, long-lasting, clean aesthetic. App response relies on home Wi-Fi: latency higher than direct SIP systems. One-time cost, no subscription fees.
