About Akuvox Access Control

From Intercom Specialist to Cloud-Based Access Platform

Akuvox was founded in 2012 in Xiamen, China, starting with VoIP and SIP communication products before moving into IP intercoms. Their SIP background is directly relevant to their access control capability: the same fast, low-latency communication protocol that makes their intercoms responsive: instant call connection, smooth video, quick door release: underpins their access control platform. Backed by Star-Net's 3,000-strong R&D team, Akuvox has expanded from intercom hardware into a broader access control ecosystem covering door stations, card readers, face recognition terminals, indoor monitors, and cloud management.

In Singapore, Securevision has used Akuvox door stations for office applications for some time: the R20A, R20K, and A5S with integrated face recognition: primarily as intercom-with-access-control units for single-door offices. The value was clear: one device handles visitor calling, face recognition, card reading, and door release, all tied to the smartphone app so the office owner can answer and release the door from anywhere. Akuvox has now extended this into a fuller multi-door cloud access control platform: targeting offices with three to five doors where a simple, server-free system managed entirely through a browser is more practical than a traditional controller-based installation.

Securevision Scope

Securevision installs Akuvox cloud access control for Singapore offices and small to medium commercial premises: typically three to five doors. We specify Akuvox where the client wants cloud management with no on-site server, smartphone app door release, and integrated face recognition without the complexity of a traditional access control system. For larger installations requiring advanced access grouping, time zones, anti-passback, and holiday scheduling at enterprise depth, we recommend ZKTeco or Suprema. Akuvox is a space we are actively developing: capabilities are expanding and we evaluate each project on its specific requirements.

Why We Use Akuvox for Access Control

The Case for Cloud-First Access Control in Singapore Offices

For small to medium offices, the traditional access control model: dedicated server, on-premise software, specialist IT support: creates more overhead than it solves. Akuvox's cloud approach removes that overhead entirely.

☁️

No Server, No Software, No Forgotten Passwords

A traditional access control system runs software on a dedicated PC or server. Over time this creates a well-known set of problems in Singapore offices: Windows updates break the software, the PC is replaced and the software is never reinstalled, the administrator who set it up has left and nobody remembers the password, or the server is simply forgotten in a back room until something goes wrong.

Akuvox's access control platform is cloud-based: configuration, user management, access logs, and door control all run in a web browser. There is no server to maintain, no software version to update, and no local installation to break. If you forget the password, the installer can reset it from the backend. If you change the office IT team, nothing changes about how the system works. This is a practical, underappreciated advantage for Singapore SME offices where IT support is limited.

📱

Smartphone App Door Release: From Anywhere

When a visitor presses the door station, the call goes through the Akuvox SmartPlus app to the office administrator or receptionist's phone. They see the visitor on video, speak to them, and release the door: from anywhere with an internet connection. This is not a new concept, but Akuvox's SIP communication background makes the connection fast and reliable in a way that some competitors' proprietary protocols do not.

For Singapore offices where the receptionist may be away from the desk, working from home, or the office runs without dedicated reception staff, this capability changes how visitor access is managed. The person in charge of the door does not need to be physically present. This same app handles arming and disarming, checking who entered and when, and managing user credentials: all from a mobile phone.

Face Recognition Built In: Fast and Reliable

Akuvox door stations include face recognition as standard on their mid and upper-range models: it is not a separate module or an add-on cost. The face recognition accuracy and speed is a direct benefit of Akuvox's AI development investment, and Securevision's Singapore deployments have found it stable and effective in real office conditions. Users can be enrolled from a photo on their phone without needing to stand in front of the reader.

For offices that want contactless entry: staff walking in without touching a reader, face recognised as they approach: Akuvox delivers this at a competitive price point compared to dedicated face recognition terminals from Suprema or ZKTeco. The trade-off is depth: Akuvox's face recognition is integrated into a device primarily designed as an intercom, while Suprema or ZKTeco build dedicated biometric hardware. For most Singapore office environments, Akuvox's level of performance is more than sufficient.

⏱️

Time and Attendance: A Feature Worth Watching

Akuvox's access control platform includes time and attendance recording: staff entry and exit times are captured and available for reporting. Securevision has not yet fully tested this capability in a live Singapore deployment, so we are not in a position to recommend it for payroll or HR compliance purposes at this stage. However it is a feature that makes the platform more interesting for small offices where a simple attendance record would otherwise require a separate terminal.

We will continue to evaluate this as the platform matures. For offices where time attendance is a firm requirement today, ZKTeco remains our primary recommendation: a proven platform with years of Singapore deployment experience across all attendance scenarios.

SECURE™ Integration

Akuvox door stations connect to Hikvision NVRs: an access event or visitor call can trigger a camera recording on the nearest NVR, creating a visual record of every entry without manual search. For offices running Akuvox for access control and Hikvision for CCTV, both systems are manageable from their respective apps without requiring a separate integration layer.

When Akuvox Is: and Is Not: the Right Access Control Choice

Akuvox cloud access control is well-suited for:

Small offices with 3–5 doors where cloud management, smartphone app door release, and face recognition are the primary requirements. Simple user management without complex access grouping or time zone rules.

Offices without dedicated IT support where a server-based system creates maintenance overhead the client cannot manage independently.

New setups starting from scratch where the clean cloud architecture is simpler to commission and hand over than a traditional controller-based system.

Akuvox is not yet the right choice for installations requiring enterprise-depth access control features: multi-level access groups, time zone scheduling, anti-passback (preventing a card being used twice without an exit event), door interlocking, multi-card authentication, or complex holiday scheduling. These capabilities exist in mature platforms like ZKTeco InBio Pro but are not yet fully developed in Akuvox's access control software. The platform is evolving and Securevision expects this gap to close within the next one to two years as Akuvox continues their development roadmap. We are actively monitoring and will update our recommendations as capabilities mature.
