Entry-Level to Mid-Range Video Intercom: Cost-Effective and Integrated
Hikvision's intercom range is a natural extension of their dominance in CCTV: the same company that produces the cameras, NVRs, and access control hardware also produces the door stations, indoor monitors, and the Hik-Connect platform that ties them together. For clients who want a single app covering CCTV cameras, access control, and video intercom, Hikvision is the only brand that delivers all three from one manufacturer on one platform.
In Singapore, Hikvision intercom is most commonly installed in two contexts: single-door offices and small commercial units where the DS-KV door station handles visitor calling, card access, and face recognition from one compact unit; and retrofit intercom upgrades for older residential buildings where the 2-wire system reuses existing building cable runs without new cabling. The product is more economical than Akuvox and fits well where the primary requirement is functional visitor calling with mobile app release at a competitive price, rather than the fastest possible connection speed or the most refined user experience.
Securevision Scope
Securevision installs Hikvision IP intercom (DS-KV and DS-KD series door stations), 2-wire intercom for retrofit projects, and 4-wire intercom for villas and smaller buildings. We specify Hikvision intercom primarily for single-door offices, landed homes where the client already has Hikvision CCTV, and retrofit projects where 2-wire compatibility with existing cabling is the deciding factor. For large condominium deployments, we recommend evaluating against Akuvox based on specific requirements.
Three Strengths: and One Honest Limitation
Hikvision intercom's advantages are clear. So is the one area where Akuvox outperforms it: worth understanding before specifying.
One App for Everything: CCTV, Intercom, and Access
Hik-Connect handles Hikvision cameras, video intercom, access control, alarms, and attendance in a single mobile app. For a client who already runs Hikvision CCTV and wants to add intercom without a second app for residents or staff to manage, this consolidation is genuinely practical. One login, one notification stream, one place to check the door camera, release access, and review footage.
This is the core reason Securevision installs Hikvision intercom for existing Hikvision CCTV clients who want to extend into intercom. The integration depth: camera bookmarks on intercom events, live view of door station camera from the same interface as CCTV cameras: is something no other brand can match because no other intercom manufacturer is also the world's largest CCTV company.
2-Wire Retrofit: Reuse Existing Building Cabling
Hikvision's 2-wire intercom range uses Power Line Communication (PLC) technology: power, video, audio, and control signals all transmitted over a single pair of existing wires. For Singapore apartments and older residential buildings where the existing intercom cabling is heavier-gauge wire (22–28AWG) that cannot be terminated into standard RJ45 connectors, this is the practical retrofit solution.
The 2-wire system replaces the old door panel and handsets or monitors with Hikvision units, running through the building's existing cable infrastructure without new cable runs. For a condominium or apartment block upgrading from an old analogue intercom, the 2-wire solution avoids the cost and disruption of pulling new Cat6 cable to every unit. The system supports HD video, mobile app integration via Hik-Connect, and card access: on the same cable that previously carried only audio.
Cost-Effective for Single-Door and Small Deployments
For a single-door office or a small landed home installation where the requirement is straightforward: visitor calling, card access, PIN entry, and mobile app door release: Hikvision's DS-KV series delivers these functions at a lower total cost than Akuvox's equivalent range. The hardware is more economical, the platform is familiar to Singapore engineers, and the installation is straightforward.
For clients comparing proposals and the detailed feature differences between Hikvision and Akuvox are not material to their specific use case, the cost advantage is real. Securevision will specify Hikvision intercom where it is the right fit and be honest when Akuvox or another brand is the better specification.
One Honest Limitation: App Response Speed
Hikvision's Hik-Connect app routes visitor calls through Hikvision's cloud servers. This means the time between a visitor pressing the door station and the resident's phone ringing and showing video depends on cloud server latency: and in testing, this has been slower than Akuvox's SmartPlus, which uses SIP protocol for near-instant connection.
For a delivery driver or a visitor standing at the door, a 3–5 second delay before the call connects is noticeable. For a busy building entrance or a condominium where quick response to visitors is operationally important, this difference matters. Hikvision's IP intercom range does support SIP protocol, but in standard SIP mode the mobile app connection is not available: it is one or the other.
Securevision's recommendation: for installations where response speed and user experience are priorities: particularly condominiums with high visitor traffic: Akuvox's SmartPlus is the stronger specification. For single-door offices and simpler residential installations where the client is already on Hik-Connect for CCTV and values the single-app convenience, Hikvision intercom is a practical and cost-effective choice.
SECURE™ Integration
Hikvision intercom integrates natively with HikCentral Access Control and Hikvision NVRs on the same platform: a door station activation event automatically bookmarks the nearest camera timestamp in HikCentral, creating a visual visitor log. For offices running Hikvision CCTV, access control, and intercom, the Hik-Connect app and HikCentral platform cover the complete security operation from one interface.
Hikvision Intercom Products We Deploy
Three intercom systems cover different deployment scenarios: IP for new installations, 2-wire for retrofits, and 4-wire for villas and smaller buildings.
DS-KV Series IP Door Stations
Hikvision's IP video intercom door stations for offices and apartments. Face recognition, card, PIN, and QR code on higher-spec models. PoE-powered. Supports up to 500 indoor stations per system. Integrated with HikCentral Access Control and Hik-Connect app. Modular design: combine door station with card reader, keypad, and camera modules as needed.
2-Wire Intercom System
Retrofit intercom using existing building cabling: no new cable runs needed. PLC technology transmits HD video, audio, and control signals over a single pair of existing wires. Suitable for older Singapore apartments and condominiums upgrading from legacy analogue intercom systems. Supports HD video and Hik-Connect mobile app.
4-Wire Villa Intercom
Simple, reliable intercom for landed homes and smaller buildings. HD video, two-way audio, door release. Indoor station with touchscreen display, Hik-Connect app for remote answering and door release. Cost-effective for straightforward residential installations where IP infrastructure is not already in place.
