Their focus is depth rather than breadth: the best possible biometric hardware, with the reliability and accuracy to match the price premium they carry. Suprema readers are widely used across Singapore's commercial, institutional, and high-security environments: both as standalone systems on Suprema's own BioStar 2 platform, and as biometric readers paired with third-party access controllers such as EntryPass or ZKTeco.
The practical case for Suprema in Singapore is straightforward: when a client needs biometric verification that works reliably over many years without false rejections, memory issues, or slow authentication, Suprema is the specification that meets that requirement. Their hardware is more expensive than ZKTeco's equivalent products, and the total system cost reflects this. But for applications where a sluggish or unreliable reader creates operational problems: a busy building entrance, a high-security server room, a hospital department: the reliability premium is justified. For new projects requiring a complete access control system, we typically recommend ZKTeco as the primary platform and offer Suprema readers for the biometric layer where higher accuracy or outdoor durability is a specific requirement.

Suprema has focused on biometric algorithm development since the company was founded. Their fingerprint recognition and facial recognition algorithms have consistently ranked at the top of independent evaluations. For Singapore's access control market, this matters most in two scenarios: high-traffic entrances where authentication speed and accuracy directly affect user experience, and high-security environments where a false acceptance: granting access to the wrong person: has real consequences.
The BioStation 3, Suprema's current facial recognition terminal, authenticates faces in under 0.2 seconds and is rated IP65 and IK06: suitable for outdoor installations. The AI algorithm handles faces with masks, hats, and glasses reliably, which has become a practical requirement since mask-wearing became normalised. For fingerprint, the BioEntry outdoor reader series has proven consistently reliable in Singapore's outdoor conditions over many years of deployment.
Outdoor Durability: Built for Singapore's Climate
Suprema's outdoor biometric readers: the BioEntry W2 and W3 series: are rated IP67 and IK08, designed for direct outdoor exposure. In Singapore's humidity, temperature variation, and UV intensity, outdoor biometric readers take significant environmental stress over time. Suprema's outdoor range has been one of the most consistent performers Securevision has deployed: lower failure rates over multi-year installation periods compared to budget alternatives that may have similar initial specifications on paper but less durable construction in practice.
For Singapore landed properties, condominiums, and commercial buildings where the biometric reader is mounted at an outdoor gate, guardhouse, or building entrance exposed to rain and direct sun, the outdoor rating is not a technical detail: it is the primary durability specification that determines how long the hardware lasts.
Reader Flexibility: Works With Third-Party Controllers
Suprema readers output via Wiegand and RS485, which means they can be paired with controllers from other brands: EntryPass, ZKTeco InBio Pro, or most other access control panels. This is practically useful: a client who already has an EntryPass or ZKTeco system can upgrade the biometric layer to Suprema readers without replacing the access control infrastructure. The controller remains, the reader changes, and the biometric accuracy improves significantly. Securevision has specified this hybrid configuration for several Singapore installations where the existing controller was still functional but the biometric readers had degraded or the client required higher-quality face recognition.
BioStar Air: Cloud Platform, Early Stage
Suprema launched BioStar Air in May 2025: a cloud-native access control platform with true zero-on-premise architecture. Readers connect directly to the cloud; no local server, no door controller, no IT maintenance overhead. The concept is sound and the architecture is genuinely different from a server-based system like BioStar 2. Each smart reader has its own built-in relay, eliminating the traditional controller layer.
Securevision's honest assessment at this stage: BioStar Air is promising but early. It launched with facial recognition only: fingerprint support is listed as coming in future updates. The platform is well-suited to small to medium multi-site deployments where simplicity of management is the priority. For large-scale enterprise installations or projects requiring the full depth of BioStar 2's capabilities, the on-premise platform remains the more mature choice. We will continue to evaluate BioStar Air as it matures: the architecture direction is right even if the feature set is still catching up.

Suprema BioStar 2 integrates with Hikvision NVR systems: an access event at a Suprema reader triggers a camera bookmark, creating a timestamped clip without manual CCTV search. Suprema readers paired with ZKTeco InBio Pro controllers via RS485 pass biometric verification results to ZKBio CVSecurity, combining Suprema's recognition accuracy with ZKTeco's broader management platform for attendance, visitor management, and elevator control.

Proven over many years of deployment in Singapore's outdoor conditions. Used at building entrances, gates, car park barriers, and any outdoor access point where biometric durability matters.
BioStar 2 Platform
Suprema's on-premise access control management platform. Web-based, covering door access, time attendance, visitor management, and elevator control. Manages all Suprema devices and integrates with Hikvision NVRs for CCTV linkage. The mature, full-featured platform for larger and enterprise installations.
A Note on Standalone Biometric Readers and Memory Management
Standalone biometric readers: whether face or fingerprint, from any brand: store enrolled user templates locally in device memory. As the user database grows over time, the device memory fills. On lower-specification readers, a full or near-full memory database causes authentication to slow noticeably, and in some cases the device needs a reboot and database cleanup to restore normal performance.
Suprema's hardware is specified to handle larger databases without this degradation: their readers are designed with sufficient processing and memory headroom for enterprise-scale user counts. This is one of the practical reasons Securevision specifies Suprema for high-traffic, high-user-count environments rather than budget biometric readers: a reader that slows down as the database fills is a maintenance problem that compounds over time. Suprema's track record on this specific operational characteristic has been consistently good across Singapore deployments over many years.
